In rebirth it has him as a toy maker, in the movies, an engineer. So it's actually both wrong and right.

Yeah, in Saw IV, his picture was shown on the cover of a Journal of Civil Engineering.

I think it is more realistic and interesting that John is an engineer. Toy maker.... Well, How could a toy maker design The Rack..? Or then Ivan's trap ? Morgan's ? Oh, Brenda too ? Well, it is more compicated as lnog as the movies advance, and then it is more complicated for a toy maker though.

I thought John worked as a toy-maker, then also there is the saw 4 evidence that he is in civil engineering. So.. I don't know.. x

ok um the saw movies universe disregarded the comic book universe
since i mean how many people that watch saw would go and read the comic
so i guess they just reinvented his background

the comic book was independent. it had no connection to the actual series. saw 4 disregarded it completely.
and i think john being a civil engineer before turning into jigsaw is much more realistic anyway.
