I think this is high on my list of traps I would not want to be in; it doesn't look like it is very survivable, and the only way I can see that you would die is bleeding to death, and it would probably be very slowly and painfully. I don't really think this guy had a chance. Unless there was an easy path that just wasn't obvious and he took the hard road because he was in a panic.
